Family celebrates boy's 'heartiversary' and honors heart donor's life

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) Brayden McCann’s family released dozens of balloons at West Temple Park Saturday evening to honor the donor who gave him a second chance at life.

Last year, Brayden was born with a congenital heart defect, and needed a heart transplant to survive.

"They pretty much told us they weren't going to be able to fix his heart, we were dependent on an organ donor,” Brayden’s mother Alyssa McCann said.

When Brayden was 3 months old, he received a heart from a child who passed away.

"We've been blessed with this beautiful baby, and then someone else blessed us by giving us the heart they were losing,” McCann said. "It beats for him and his organ donor."

One year after the procedure, Brayden’s family and friends came together to celebrate what they call a “heartiversary,” and to honor the life of the organ donor with a balloon release. Continue reading
