ND mother hears son's heartbeat 6 years after he donated it to Utah girl

WEST FARGO — Jeff and Bobbi Fetzer of West Fargo lost their 7-year-old son in an accident six years ago. It was the last day of school, and Mikey was hit by a pickup truck as he crossed a street.

Just days earlier, Mikey had told his parents he wanted to be an organ donor. He'd heard about it at school.

As Mikey's family grieved, his heart went to Salt Lake City to save the life of an 11-year-old girl named Mia Brickey.

After years of hoping and planning, the Fetzer family finally got the chance to meet Mia, now 17.

"I am ready," Bobbi said as she waited recently for Mia to arrive at the Fargo airport. "I can't wait to give her a hug."

Once Mia walked off the plane, Bobbi hugged her tight, knowing Mikey's heart was beating inches away. And then hours later, a mother who lost her son heard life through a stethoscope.
