Donated kidney brings good cheer, new lease on life

The holiday season is upon us. Many gather around family, reflect upon what they are grateful for and ponder on how the New Year ahead looks for them. But, for one local man, the holiday season is extra merry and bright. James Guerrero, 28, of Seguin, has recently received a donated kidney after several years on the transplant list.

“I was born prematurely, and so my right kidney never developed. My left kidney was damaged, but still functioned,” Guerrero explained. “You can live a somewhat normal life with just one kidney and mine lasted for 26 years, which is pretty amazing.”

Unfortunately, though, James began to experience the symptoms of kidney failure two years ago.

“I was kind of in denial about my symptoms for a while,” he recalled. “But finally my doctor said, ‘James, you’ve got to decide what you’re going to do.’ I didn’t want to pass away, I’ve got my whole life left to live.” Continue reading
