‘Gift of Life’ celebrated

MICHAEL KELLY The Marietta Times A hand-decorated ornament graces a Christmas tree while transplant recipients and the families of donors talk in the background at the annual Memorial Health System Gift of Life holiday gathering Thursday.
It was a gathering of people who escaped death, blindness and lives of disability, a group with the common experience of getting a second chance.

The Memorial Health System Gift of Life annual holiday gathering was held Thursday night at Marietta Memorial Hospital, bringing together organ and tissue transplant recipients and the families of donors, along with transplant network representatives and physicians. The group of about two dozen spent a couple of hours talking over refreshments and decorating ornaments for a tree to be displayed for the holidays in the hospital.

Dr. Holly Freed, a palliative care physician, told the group that her specialty puts her with people at the end of their lives, a time when they confront the things that really matter in their lives. Continue reading
