Boston cop plans plea for kidney donation to father John Nucci

STILL SEARCHING: Former City Councilor John Nucci, who is waiting for a kidney transplant, was ‘floored’ when his son, Mike Nucci, a Boston cop, appealed to the public on the department’s news blog.
Boston cops have issued a public plea for potential kidney donors in an effort to help former City Councilor John Nucci, the father of a Hub officer.

“Last week, the Boston Police Department learned that the father of one our own, former city councilor John Nucci (father of BPD officer Mike Nucci), is suffering from Polycystic Kidney Disease and is in need of a kidney transplant,” the department wrote in a post on its news blog.

“John Nucci’s father passed away years ago from PKD, and although he has known for some time that he carried the hereditary disease, John’s kidneys had been fully functioning until recently,” the post adds.

John’s son orchestrated the effort without telling his father — he wanted to minimize stress for the former councilman after months of health troubles.

“I wanted to just give him the final result,” Mike Nucci told the Herald. “What inspired me to do it was that we’ve been going through this for a few months, so I wanted to spread the word as much as I can. I thought it would get the word out and lift his spirits.” Continue reading
