Sophia Chan appeals for organ donors not to cancel

Acting Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan is appealing to the public not to cancel their organ donor registrations.

The bureau has received more than 200 cancellation applications, a number much higher than earlier weeks.

Recent reports on a dying mother who was saved by a liver donor had brought an increase in the number of registrations.

But online chatter has called for cancellations after the United Christian hospital apologised this week for its error in treating the mother.

Professor Chan said that the Hospital Authority is investigating the case at United Christian, but that the public should keep in mind the broader need for organ donors.

She said that about 2,000 patients are waiting for organ transplants on any given day. Continue reading
