Second chance at life for father

“Four years ago, my husband was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, also known as ‘PSC,’” Laura Jacobs said. “He had jaundice, extreme fatigue, weight loss, stomach issues. There were a number of issues and symptoms, but those were the most prominent ones. It was just a slow and steady increase (in severity).”

While genetic factors can play a role in development of autoimmune diseases, Laura Jacobs said there’s been no instances of anyone in her husband’s family having liver disease. Once he was diagnosed, however, she knew he’d eventually have to be on the list of people awaiting a liver transplant.
Every time someone signs up to be an organ, eye, bone marrow and tissue donor, they have the possibility of saving eight lives and improving countless more.

That’s according to Laura Jacobs, daughter of Fred and Wanda Strege, Wahpeton. On Friday, June 2, Jacobs’ husband Ben, 38, received a liver transplant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

It can take up to 10 years just to get on the transplant waiting list, but in Ben Jacobs’ case, he was able to get listed in the city of Omaha beginning in June 2016. A few months later, he was able to also get listed in the city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Continue reading
