Organ donor awareness fundraiser held in wake of Fort Myers teen's death

A non-profit held a fundraiser to raise awareness for organ donation while a Fort Myers teen was undergoing surgery to donate his organs.

Erik Babatz, a junior at Fort Myers High School, was a passenger in one of three cars involved in an accident over the weekend.

He became brain dead, and on Wednesday, his family shared on social media he was taken off of life support, and that the organs that were usable will be donated.

His family said his heart will be donated to a pediatric patient waiting for a transplant.

According to the National Foundation for Transplants, 22 people die every day while waiting for an organ. It also states on its website that one donor has the power to save eight lives and change the lives of more than 50 people. Continue reading
